Sandra Steingraber said, "I'm beginning to perceive motherhood as a long, slow letting go, of which birth is just the first step." As parents, we are constantly faced with the terrifying feeling of having to let our children go and take risks - whether that be letting our toddler take their first steps (certain they will fall on their face) or sending our graduates off to find their way in an uncertain world. It's never easy to let our children go (in fact, it's gut-wrenching) but if we want our children to be courageous in the face of fear, we must model that that courage as parents. So remember, just when you want to hold on tighter, sometimes you have to release your grip, hold your breath and watch...that's love.
Take a peek at this session that took place on a Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo. I have been photographing this family for five years and for this session we decided to document the first time the girls rode their bikes solo. It was an unforgettable session.
There were a lot of emotions displayed including:
Anticipation...
Surprise...
Pride...
Trust and security...
A healthy dose of fear coupled with courage...
Letting go doesn't mean that you can't open your arms at the end and give those you love a big, fat hug!
Thanks for another wonderful session, Storm family! Love you guys! xo
