Finding Magic in Your City: A Downtown Kalamazoo Family Photography Session

It is easy to believe that creativity requires new places, especially in our Instagrammable world. But sometimes, the best inspiration is right in front of us in our own cities. This downtown Kalamazoo family photography session with three teenagers is proof that you don't need a new place to create something fresh. Here are a few tips to make the most of your city...

Tip 1: Anchor the Story with a Favorite Store of Activity

Every town has a local gem that can bring a story to life. For this session, that place was Rocket Fizz — a candy shop packed with color, nostalgia, and personality. The girls explored the different candy options and chose a soda from the towering refrigerator wall.

Tip 2: Explore the Murals in Your City

Murals are more than backdrops — they’re invitations to play with color, movement, and message. Kalamazoo’s “Make It a Great Day” wall (designed by Amy @amyamybobamy) is one of my favorites, and it set the perfect tone for this session. The girls danced, walked, and laughed their way across the pavement, the bright typography echoing their energy. Encourage your subjects to move naturally in front of murals instead of posing stiffly. Let the art guide the emotion.

Tip 3: Study the Light — It May Surprise You

When you shoot in familiar places, start to notice when and how the light changes. The “Love” graffiti wall downtown caught my eye because of how the afternoon light sliced across it, illuminating the message Live, Love in a way that felt cinematic.

Later, on the rooftop, that same bold sunlight added an edge that suited the teenage energy of the session — golden, direct, and unapologetic. Don’t be afraid of harsh light; sometimes it’s exactly what the story needs.

Tip 4: Use Architecture & Leading Lines

Every city has visual rhythm — it might be the curve of a stairway, the reflection of glass, or the way a sidewalk leads toward a subject. Downtown Kalamazoo is full of geometric opportunities if you slow down to see them.

Tip 5: End on a Sweet Note

As the sun dipped, the family found a rooftop perch and toasted with their chosen sodas — and lollipops.

It felt like the perfect ending — proof that photography isn’t about going somewhere new. It’s about noticing what’s already here, right where you live and creating new memories together.
