Beyond the Portrait | Kalamazoo Lifestyle Photography

I have been photographing these three sisters for 10 years! In every session, I make sure to get the posed images (family, siblings, individual portraits). While the posed images are necessary to complete a gallery, they don't tell the story of who people are and what they are interested in. It's the documentary + lifestyle pictures that allow the narrative to unfold.

Above the three sisters sit for a posed picture. Although I love this picture and the school setting, we wanted to showcase more of their interests and personalities...

So, we jumped off walls...

hung upside down...

jumped off swings...

played basketball...

and soccer...

We took breaks to tie shoes...

and we played football until the sun set on our session and another season of life...

By incorporating posed pictures and lifestyle pictures, the story takes shape allowing us to look back years later with a better understanding of who the people were beyond the portrait.
