Monochrome

Monochrome, black and white, timeless.

There is nothing better than a crisp black and white photograph. With that said, not all black and whites are created equal and not all photographs convert well to black and white. It's one of the challenges of editing images. It's hard to find which photographs to convert and to make sure that the conversion does the photograph justice and captures the mood. When the right conditions come together, a black and white can be just as compelling if not more compelling than a color image. Two of the conditions I feel make a good black and white are 1) lighting 2) emotion and/or connection. Ted Grant said, "when you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their soul." Of course, the true judge of the color vs. black and white debate is the client. They need to decide which tells their story best. Here are some comparisons from a recent shoot.
